The Quigley’s Story

Quigley’s Building Supply dates back to January of 1944 when George T. Quigley bought the existing H.W. Coffin Lumber & Building Materials store. In 1944 when George T. Quigley purchased H.W. Coffin Lumber & Building Materials, he bought the land the store resided on, the store and its entire inventory. He also acquired the lumberyard and use of the road, all purchased for $6,806.90. George T. Quigley operated the business for only 9 years before he passed away at the age of 52. His son Donald Quigley quickly assumed responsibility when he was in his early 20’s, essentially building the Quigley’s name to what it is today.

Donald would not only become a major supplier of building materials for the area, but he also became the general contractor for some of Fort Kent’s largest projects, such as the building the Fort Kent Community High School, Pinkham Lumber Mill in Ashland and some of the buildings at the University of Maine Fort Kent. Donald married Doris Robichaud and together they had four girls Peggy, Donna, Karen, and Colleen. In 1975, Donald built an entire new store, directly behind the original one, not closing for one day during construction.

This new structure is the bigger, more modern structure that you see today. The new expansion was 60’ x 120’ with more than 7,000 square feet of retail space. In the late 70’s, Karen married Norman “Bim” Ouellette and he began his work at Quigley’s in 1976. As Donald approached retirement, Bim assumed more responsibility and eventually became Manager in the 80’s and subsequently became the owner. Bim improved Quigley’s by finishing the second floor of the store and doubling its retail space.

In 2001, Bim would have to make the difficult decision of changing co-ops from True Value (whom they were a part of for nearly 25 years) to Do it Best Corp. Do it Best represents 4,100 independently owned hardware and home improvement retailers. They are the only full-line, full-service buying cooperative in the hardware, lumber and building materials industry. Do it Best Corp. member stores are located in all 50 states and in 45 countries worldwide, giving Quigley’s more buying power and an opportunity to offer their customers more products at better prices.

Bim and Karen had two girls, Nicole and Michelle. Michelle married Justin Dubois, who had started working at Quigley’s in 2002. In August 2006, Donald Quigley passed away at the age of 76. A little more than one year later in November 2007, Norman “Bim” Ouellette passed away at the age of 51. His wife Karen has remained owner of Quigley’s and is working in the office and Justin Dubois is now the manager. Quigley’s is 65 years old and in its fourth generation. In the 65 years of Quigley’s existence we have provided our customers with the best building material, at the best prices with the best customer service possible.
